Halong Bay is a limestone rock formation. It covers about 1500 km2. Halong means "the bay of the descending dragons". According to a local legend god sent a family of dragons to protect Vietnam from Chinese invaders.
We explored Halong Bay on the board of the most beautiful vessel we have ever been. Beautiful woodwork and elegant design, delicious food and excellent service. Our cabin (rather a room ) was big enough to have a dining area, a huge bathroom and two terraces. 24 hours of paradise. The bay is breathtaking with the peaks around, one after an other. Some of them form a circle around a lagoon - 360 degrees - and the only entrance is a tunnel through the rocks. Monkeys live inside in small caves. Tourists bring them fruits and veggies.
Not only monkeys live around but people in a floating fishing village. The rocks give them protection from the elements. They are poor fellows fishing for squids. No electricity, 4-5 families share one toilet, some of them never left their 15 m2 floating house. The government provides them some education - elementary and secondary - in one of the floating houses - but going to a university is very hard for these kids. We saw a 2 years old who already was learning how to row a boat. The government wants to move them to the mainland but these people only know how to live on sea, they can't imagine what they would do instead of fishing. toilet, some of them never left their 15 m2 floating house.
