Hotel Metropole Cafe terrace |
We are staying at the Metropol Sofitel hotel in the old wing. Colonial style, beautifully renovated. Thre are 3 resraurants in the hotel - French, Italian and a Vietnamese, and a bar and a pool in the courtyard. We ate in the Vietnamese one which was an excellent choice. We took a bycicle tuktuk for an afternoon sightseeing to get a first glimpse where we are. Took a ride around the area where locals shop and dine. Narrow streets, tiny stores selling everyday items and junk. People cooking and eating on the street sitting on very low, tiny plastic chairs, the kind I bought for my kids when they were at age 3.
Mainly there are only motor scooters, Vespas here approx 2 million and very few cars - some 600 thousands. The motor scooters occupy the roads fully like a giant never ending vehicle, giving a constant buzzing noise to the city.
It took us 18 hours to get here, Budapest-Doha-Bangkok-Hanoi by Qatar airways.
