Első állomásunk Fès, Marokkó északi részén található, ezt a várost tartják Marokkó szívének. Muszlimok, arabok, berberek, zsidók és arikai feketék lakják.
A város három részre tagolódik: Fès el-Bali - óváros, Fès el-Jdid - új város és Ville Nouvelle - a franciák által épített negyed.

Fès el-Bali a legrégebbi épségben megmaradt óváros (Medina) a világban, 808-ban építették és körben falak védik. 9500 sikátor hálózza be, 4 kapuja van, 300.000 ember lakja, bár eredetileg 80.000 embernek épült, olyan mint egy labirintus.
A szűk utcácskákban árusok ezrei próbálják eladni a portékáikat a helyieknek és a túristáknak. Minden érzékedre szükséged van, ha be akarod fogadni a látványt, az illatokat, a színek kavalkádját. Az utcák annyira szűkek, hogy egy dobozokkal megpakolt szamár éppen elfér, ami azt jelenti, hogy a járókelőknek be kell ugraniuk az üzletekbe, ha nem akarják, hogy elsodorják őket. Autóval nem lehet bemenni a Medinába, ezért az egyetlen szállítási eszköz a szamár. Időnként mi is érdekes szituációba kerültünk és ugrottunk amerre láttunk.
Rengeteg olyan ember él itt, aki még sosem hagyta el a Medinát. Régen a nők a házukat sem hagyhatták el csak kétszer életükben, először amikor átköltöztek az apai házból a férjükhöz, másodszor haláluk után, amikor a temetőbe vitték őket. A francia gyarmatosítás után minden liberálisabb lett.
Az óváros sikátoraiban mindent lehet venni, az árusok témák szerint helyezkednek el. Van bőr szekció, étel, cipő, ruha, ékszer, elektronikai szekció és még ki tudja milyen.

It is said that Fès is the heart of Morocco. People are either Muslims, Arabs, Berbers, Jews or black Africans.
The city has three districts: Fès el-Bali - the old city, Fès el-Jdid - new town and the Ville Nouvelle that was built by the French. Fès el-Bali is the oldest medival town remained intact in the world. It was established in 808 and surrounded by walls, has 4 entrances and 9500 allès. The old town is called the Medina, where 300.000 people live though it was built for 80.000.
The Medina is like a maze wit its narrow streets where you get confused about your whereabouts exactly in 2 minutes. The streets are so narrow than when a donkey or mule loaded with boxes on its back want to pass by, people has to jump into the many shops that are just all over the place. There are no cars in the Medina so the only available transportations are the donkeys. Thousands and thousands of shops are selling their goods to the locals or to the tourists. You need all your senses to absorb the noise, the vivid colors, the smell of people or lether, the food and the donkeys.

Many people has never ever left the Medina in their entire life. Not long ago woman weren't allowed to leave their house either. They left 2 times in their life: after the marriage to move from the family home to the new husbands home and second time on their own funeral to the cemetery. With the French occupation the country become more liberal.

The shops are placed in the Medina by themes. There is a food district, a leather, clothes, shoes district, jewelry and electronics.
